[ARCHIVED] Canadensis Couple Face Murder Charges in Death of Baby Girl

H(ONESDALE --  Wayne County District Attorney A.G. Howell announced the arrest of Wayne A. Tompkins and Emily Ann Mack for the September 25, 2019, homicide of W.T., a 3 month old female. Mack, 28, was the the child’s mother and  Tompkins, 36, was Mack’s boyfriend and father of the child.

The Affidavits of Probable Cause filed by State Trooper Gregory Allen allege that Mack and Tompkins were drug users. The child, was in the custody and control of Mack and Tompkins during the period immediately prior to the child’s death. An autopsy conducted on September 26, 2019, along with a final pathology report, revealed the infant sustained:

• Multiple contusions/bruises of the torso and extremities.

• Numerous acute and healing fractures at various stages of healing.

• Intradural hemorrhages, vascular congestion, brain edema (brain swelling), and indicators of axonal injury (traumatic brain injury).

• The presence of methamphetamine and cocaine.

The Pathologist, Dr. Rameen Starling-Roney, ruled that the cause of death was multiple injuries, methamphetamine toxicity and cocaine exposure. Dr. Starling-Roney ruled the manner of death to be Homicide.

In addition, when the Pennsylvania State Police executed a search warrant of the Mack/Tompkins residence directly following the infant’s death they found numerous items of illegal drugs and paraphernalia, some of which were laying around the house within reach of their 2 year old son. On September 26, 2019, both Mack and Tompkins were charged with Endangering the Welfare of Children, a third (3rd) degree felony. Wayne County CYS took custody of the 2-year-old child. Both Mack (Oct. 13, 2019) and Tompkins (Oct. 8, 2019) posted bail after the filing of those charges and have remained at large during the death investigation of their infant child.

On July 7, 2020, Mack and Tompkins were apprehended in Bensalem Township. On July 9, 2020, Magisterial District Judge Linus Myers did not set bail. The Central Court date is set for July 15, 2020.

District Attorney Howell stated “The Pennsylvania State Police’s extensive investigation led them to file charges against Mr. Tompkins and Ms. Mack because they allegedly caused the death of W.T. by injuring W.T. and exposing her to drugs. We will continue to investigate claims of child abuse, and when justified, prosecute those responsible for injuring a young child, and in this case, charged with killing a baby girl.”
