[ARCHIVED] 7th Annual Safety Fair Focuses on Kids & Fun May 19

SafetyFairFlier

The Wayne County Safety Fair for Kids teaches children and parents about the many different types of risks families face each day.  In this country, 26,000 children are injured everyday and 22,000 dies as a result of injuries each year. This free fair teaches children about school bus safety, fire safety and much more.

Free bicycle helmets will be distributed to children who need them, free fun locks from the Wayne County Sheriff's Depatment, and the Wayne County Business and Professional Women provide Safe Kid Kits that include fingerprintng and recent photo in case a child is lost or taken. Wayne Memorial Hospital, Sprout Pediatric Dental, Wayne County Family Center and Early Head Start will be on hand, along with County agencies including Early Intervention, Drug & Alcohol, Emergency Operations and 911.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 8,700 lives have been saved by the proper use of child restraints. Yet, motor vehicle crashes are still the number one killer of children ages 4 to 14. That's often because child safety seats and booster seats are not properly installed. In an effort to educate parents and to ensure proper safety seat installation, Wayne County Safety Fair will host a free safety seat check conducted by trained PA State Troopers.

Parents are asked to bring their vehicle’s owner’s manual and child safety seat instructions. Each safety seat inspection takes approximately 20 minutes. No prior registration is required. Parents should not be using ‘hand-me-down’ or used car seats and seats should not be used for more than five years, and they should  also not be using a seat that has been in a crash - even if the child was not in the seat at the time.

Replacement car seats and booster seats are available at no charge, and one car seat per child per family will be offered if replacement is required.

There will also be plenty of fun activities and free refreshments.
